In the wake of the COVID shutdowns, the crew needed out. The answer was a backpack trip into the north side of Cascade Lake — warm weather, open sky, and nobody around. KD2MYS sat this one out, but KD2WFX and the gang made the hike in with more gear than strictly necessary and didn't regret a pound of it.
It turned out to be an exceptionally warm and beautiful weekend for early May. The hike in was manageable enough to haul real supplies, and the site delivered: the kids hiked out to a waterfall and spent time fishing for Lake Trout. No radios on this trip — just camping the way it used to be done.
Somewhere around the campfire that weekend, the decision got made: same time next year. The Mayday camping trip was officially a thing. North Lake came the following year, and it stuck.
