The North Lake Hockey Hams got their start on the bench, not the airwaves. The core group all met coaching youth hockey together, and over years of early-morning practices and tournament weekends they became close friends. Two of the coaches—Eric Parent (KD2MYS) and Eric Gulseth (KD2WFX)—happened to share another interest: amateur radio. That common thread turned out to be the spark for everything that followed.
As the group grew tighter, they started planning annual camping trips to North Lake in the Adirondacks, bringing their sons along for a few days of hiking, campfire cooking, and the kind of trouble you can only find in the backcountry. The trips blended hockey camaraderie with outdoor living and, naturally, some portable radio operations deep in the woods. Forming an actual club felt like the next logical step—a way to make sure the trips keep happening, capture the memories, document the radio work, and maybe draw in a few more like-minded folks.
